Race Recap: MCGT3 at Daytona
DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY – 16 JANUARY 22

The 2022 racing season kicked off with the Mermaids Charity GT3 Series at Daytona on Sunday, with new drivers and teams taking part to raise funds and awareness for Mermaids UK – a charity that supports transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse children, young people, and their families.

Returning driver and last season’s champion, Emily Howe of Prismatic Motorsports, started on the pole for race 1, with +MVT Racing’s Chris Nolte in P2, Steven Carlile in P5, and Matt Zee in P6.

The initial race came down to the wire, as Howe made the pass for the win at the line over Go For The Gap Racing’s Mira Schmitt, with Nolte right behind in P3. The margin of victory was a mere 0.04 seconds. Carlile finished P4 and Zee in P5.

Race 2 did not start well for the +MVT drivers, as contact between cars ahead taking the green flag led to many behind taking evasive action and losing momentum. Problems compounded for Nolte after spinning out of the bus stop while avoiding two other spinning cars. The damage was severe, but he went on to finish the race in P9.

While battling for P4 on lap 8, Carlile spun entering turn 6 and lost multiple positions. He did manage to recover and secure the final podium spot.

Matt Zee avoided disaster on multiple occasions, navigating through spinning cars and overcoming the trouble at the start en route to a P6 finish.

The win went to Schmitt, with Howe grabbing the runner-up spot.

Overall, it was a positive result for +MVT, taking podiums in both races and scoring enough points to leave the weekend 2nd in the team championship standings.

The series is off next week, but will return on January 30th at Watkins Glen for round 2.
